Atlanta, GA (July 28, 2009) – NBA All-Star Dikembe Mutombo (Houston Rockets) was invited to speak at the inaugural Beyond Sport Summit in London which began on July 7 with three days dedicated to sport and development issues and where the leading social entrepreneurs from across the world mixed with a host of influential global figures.
Mr. Mutombo was joined at the Beyond Sport Awards, which recognized the best sport-led social innovation initatives from across the world, by Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Prince Faisal Al Hussein of Jordan; Boris Johnson, Mayor of London; and Wilfried Lemke, United Nations Special Advisor to the Secretary General.
These winners, were chosen from a shortlist of 32 projects and initiatives, whose representatives were brought to London from all five continents, reaching 40 countries, to participate in all three days.
The Summit's climactic day was held on July 9 and included panels, interviews and discussions with some of the world’s leaders in business, government and development focussing on sport’s role in various global issues such as education, health, crime, and social inclusion.
